Spring is on its way and there are lots of ways to get involved as a volunteer, whether you like to work in the field, in the office or at home in your slippers! Read about our latest volunteer opportunities in this issue.
Volunteer Classified
Design/Layout
King County
Word wizard needed to create a master template and style guide for the design and layout of a 10-chapter resource manual for Conservation Partnership Resource Center. Implement design guidelines and standardize formatting throughout document, create table of contents, cross check bibliography. Requires high level of proficiency in MS Word 2007 and Adobe Acrobat, attention to detail, technical editing skills, strong written and verbal communication skills and good sense of design. Internships
Data Analysis Intern for Watershed Study
Dates & location flexible
Intern needed to summarize baseline data collected for a watershed restoration study at Ellsworth Creek Preserve. Summarize vegetation and amphibian data into graphs and a summary report. Applicants should have a background in biology/ecology or related field, and have taken at least one statistics course. Experience in ecological data collection, data analysis and familiarity with statistical software highly preferred. Be self-motivated, reliable, and work well independently with minimal supervision. Marine Conservation Intern
Dates & location flexible
Project help needed this spring or summer with the Conservancy’s marine conservation program. Review marine policy Web site to identify problems with messaging, typographical errors, and nonfunctioning links. Research existing marine projects and write short summaries of the programs. Work can be done from home or Conservancy office. Desired qualifications: general understanding of marine ecosystems and conservation strategies, internet research skills, writing and editing skills. Work Parties
Prairie Restoration
Saturdays, Feb. 13 & March 13
Thurston County
Try your hand at a weed wrench! Join other volunteers in restoring the South Sound prairies on the second Saturday of each month. Pull invasive plants, help with seed cleaning and other tasks as needed. All work parties are family-friendly and new faces always welcome. Saturday work days are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stay as long as you like.
Ongoing Tuesday workdays continue from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. weekly at prairie sites around Thurston County. For directions and more information on prairie work days, contact Lauren at lpoulos@tnc.org.
Foulweather Bluff Ivy Pull
Saturday, Feb. 20
Kitsap County
Help scour the forest at Foulweather Bluff in search of young holly or ivy sprouts to keep the preserve free of these invasive plants. Be prepared to scramble over logs and crash through dense brush. We need able-bodied, hearty volunteers! Plan to bring rain jacket and rain pants to prepare for wet underbrush, sturdy boots, gloves, lunch and water.
